Andy Smith
Web Developer
Master Craftsman & Coder
Andy Smith builds stuff. Sometimes it’s a beautiful website. Sometimes it’s a handcrafted table. Either way, he’s in his happy place making things that work (and work well). If it can be designed or debugged, Andy’s your guy.
He grew up in Fremont, Indiana, a small town just south of the Michigan border. Andy was a curious kid who balanced his time between baseball and Boy Scouts. One taught him how to work as a team, the other instilled a deep appreciation and respect for the outdoors.
More than anything, his childhood was full of tinkering. His dad let him get hands-on early, working on cars and construction projects, which sparked Andy’s “figure it out” spirit. That spirit, combined with his love of science, led him to study chemistry and anthropology at Purdue University, giving him a holistic perspective on how the physical world works.
After college, Andy worked as an analytical chemist in the pharmaceutical industry. He mastered strict FDA protocols, managed projects and troubleshot complex issues. While he loved the lab, he wondered if web development was his true calling. It had been an interest of his for years, and with his wife working as a web developer and several close friends in software, fate seemed to push him toward this new career path. And after years of self-teaching and freelancing, he found Estland.
As one of our talented Web Developers, Andy coordinates with marketing managers, web designers and his web development teammates to translate visual designs into functional, beautiful websites. And if something breaks, he stops at nothing to solve the problem and “figure it out.”
I take pride in the things I build, whether it's in my woodshop or on a webpage. It's rewarding to see unique design elements come to life after a process of trial and error.
Outside of work, Andy is a tinkerer through and through, constantly starting new woodworking, metalworking, 3D printing or DIY home projects. He and his wife love the outdoors and take full advantage of their home near Portland, OR, to hike, camp, kayak, fish, ski and explore nearby national parks. Their beagle, Ellie, regularly joins them on adventures.
Fun fact: Andy is colorblind and uses RGB value checkers in the development process, giving him a first-hand perspective on the importance of ADA compliance in web development.
